UB’s Thai Language and Cultural Exchange Program Nurtures Global Connections and Values

The University of Baguio has long been committed to fostering international partnerships and networking to enhance the holistic development of its students. One such initiative, UB, in collaboration with the College of Asian Scholars in Khon Kaen, Thailand, has provided unique opportunities for its students through the Thai Language and Cultural Exchange program. This partnership has enabled exchange students to work with different schools, including Phon Commercial and Technical College (PCTC) and Krasaepattana School (KSP).

Reflecting on her experience, former exchange student Marjorie Grace Eslao highlighted the enduring connections forged during the program: “Yes, I’ve maintained connections with several individuals from the exchange program, particularly the Thai Teachers and students as well as the other exchange students from Japan and Cambodia.” She emphasized how these relationships enriched her life and broadened her cultural awareness. “They have given me unshakable support through the highs and lows of life, expanded my perspective on the world, and deepened my awareness of many cultures. All in all, these relationships have been priceless in helping me grow personally and make treasured memories. Marjorie jokingly added, “The benefits of having connections include having someone act as my tour guide when I travel to other countries”.

Brigida Sumakey, another former exchange student, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the significant learning experiences gained: “There are a lot of notable learning experiences during the culture exchange program, such as the way how teachers or school staff care for their students [which includes] home visitation for the students, one-on-one remediation, others).” She highlighted the strong rapport between students and teachers observed during her time in Thailand. Marjorie also expressed, “Beyond language skills, my time in Thailand provided invaluable lessons in cultural adaptability, resilience, and the importance of interpersonal relationships. Living immersed in Thai culture taught me the significance of respect, patience, and humility in navigating diverse environments.”

Furthermore, both Marjorie and Brigida emphasized the impact of their experiences on building connections and relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. Brigida noted, “My experience in Thailand had opened me to the possibility that we can truly connect and create stronger bonding relationships with different cultures despite barriers such as language differences. This teaches me a lesson that ‘drives’  me to take the opportunity to build connections with the people we get to meet and understand them rather than determining who they are with just a glimpse. Let’s try to put ourselves in their shoes – they are also like us… a person who wants to learn, connect, build relations with other people..”

The immersion of Filipino exchange students in Thai culture has broadened their perspectives and enriched their experiences. Beyond academic settings, these students have first-hand experienced the intricacies of Thai traditions, customs, and daily life. This immersion has presented both challenges and triumphs in learning a language foreign to them.

As UB continues to create partnerships with institutions worldwide, the Thai Language and Cultural Exchange program stands as proof of the university’s commitment to nurturing global citizens. Through these initiatives, students not only gain valuable academic and cultural insights but also develop into well-rounded individuals capable of bridging cultural divides and fostering meaningful connections.
