STELA instructor is a research fellow in Singapore top university

Ivan Jim S. Layugan, an alumni and current faculty-researcher with the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts is one of the invited scholars to the National University of Singapore’s prestigious Asia Research Institute as a graduate student research fellow for social sciences in the 2020 intake. He is part of the Changing Family in Asia cluster.

His ongoing study on narratives, practices, experiences, and lives of gay fathers earned him the fellowship where he can develop his study with the resources of NUS and under the tutelage of his assigned research adviser, Dr. Bittiandra Chand Somaiah.

Mr. Layugan’s research interests include gendered narratives, social semiotic multimodality, autobiographical discourses, crisis communication, and community resilience. He is currently studying at University of the Philippines Baguio where he is writing his Master’s thesis on coming out narratives of Filipino gay men as a CHED Factulty Development Plan II full scholar.

While immersing on development research projects in the Cordillera region of the Philippines, he writes about popular culture and society for the online news outfit Rappler. Recently, he represented the Philippines as fellow to the Young Journalist Exchange in Tokyo, Japan, and has talked about his research on popular culture at the University of Macau in Macau, China. He teaches semantics and qualitative research at the University of Baguio. He was named Outstanding Citizen of his home province Benguet for his involvement in research and achievements in communication.
