Serving, Learning, Transforming: The Culmination of the UB Field Study Students’ Observation and Teaching Assistantship at the University of Baguio High School

The Field Study Students (FSSs) from the University of Baguio concluded their observation and teaching assistantship journey at the University of Baguio High School (UBHS), marking their final day with meaningful reflections and a deeper appreciation of the teaching profession. Their stay at UBHS allowed them to experience authentic classroom work where they planned lessons, facilitated learning activities, assessed student outputs, and collaborated with resource teachers. These experiences strengthened their competence in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, and the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). They practiced creating developmentally appropriate lessons, building inclusive and safe learning environments, aligning objectives with classroom activities, and using assessment tools to support student growth. Through meetings, consultations, and school activities, they also embodied professionalism and a sense of community expected in PPST Domain 7.

Beyond these tasks, the FSSs also gained meaningful personal insights. Many entered the classroom with uncertainties and fears, but the day-to-day interactions with learners helped them grow in confidence, patience, and adaptability. They learned that teaching requires not only knowledge and strategy, but also empathy, understanding, and the ability to connect with diverse students. Their resource teachers guided them through challenges, offering feedback that shaped their professional identity and helped them recognize both their strengths and areas for improvement. As they completed their final day at UBHS, the FSSs carried with them gratitude for the environment that allowed them to serve, learn, and transform. Their journey reaffirmed their commitment to becoming future educators who uphold quality education, promote learner well-being, and contribute to the goals of the SDGs and the PPST. With their UBHS experience now a cherished chapter, they step forward with purpose, ready to bring their learning into their future classrooms.

These FSSs depart not just as students who observed, but as passionate torchbearers ready to illuminate the path for others. They are the Beacons of the University of Baguio, exemplifying a fierce commitment to the calling of education. This dedication echoes the spirit of Nelson Mandela, who profoundly stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” By embracing the challenges of the classroom, they have internalized this truth, realizing that teaching is an act of liberation and empowerment. They are driven by an unyielding passion to be agents of change, ensuring that every student, regardless of background, receives the quality education they deserve. Their hearts are tuned to the frequency of their learners’ needs, embodying the understanding that the most effective lesson is the one taught with unconditional care. They step into the future, their UBHS experiences not simply memories, but the bedrock of a lifelong mission to lead, to inspire, and to transform lives, one classroom at a time. They are the living promise of a brighter educational landscape.

The FSSs have truly become the embodiment of Plato’s ideal educator, understanding that “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.” Their time spent meticulously planning lessons and building inclusive environments demonstrates a profound realization that their role extends far beyond instruction; it is about character building and fostering critical citizens. They have embraced the philosophy of Maria Montessori, who advocated for following the child, allowing the FSSs to grow in patience and adaptability through day to day interactions. This experience instilled a devoted sense of responsibility, moving them from apprehensive beginners to confident, self assured professionals. Their collaboration with resource teachers and commitment to professionalism was not forced compliance, but the joyful adoption of an identity dedicated to service. They are now prepared to approach every classroom as a sacred space, ready to promote learner well being and uphold the tenets of quality education with unwavering conviction. Their success is a testament to the powerful synergy of practical application and pure vocational ardor. The future trajectory of Philippine education will be significantly shaped by the commitment of these dedicated individuals, whose every action now reflects the profound impact they are poised to make in their upcoming field studies and beyond.
