Fostering Global Perspectives: UB Hosts Seminar on English Interpreting and Cross-Cultural Teaching Practices

“Equipping educators with cross-cultural competence for a globalized classroom.”

The University of Baguio (UB) recently hosted a groundbreaking seminar titled “Enhancing English Interpreting Skills and Exploring Teaching Practices in a Cross-Cultural Context.” This initiative, a joint effort of UB’s Graduate School EDD program and its teacher education programs (BSED, BEED, and BPED), underscored the importance of collaboration and cultural awareness in education.

The seminar’s highlight was the involvement of a Chinese EDD student as the resource speaker, bringing unique insights to the undergraduate Field Study (FSS) and PROFEN 1 & 2 students. This cross-cultural engagement provided participants with practical strategies for teaching in diverse classrooms and interpreting English texts effectively.

The seminar aligned with global trends in education, preparing future educators to navigate multicultural environments with sensitivity and adaptability. It also supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – By promoting inclusive teaching practices, the program aimed to enhance education quality for learners from varied backgrounds.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – The collaborative effort between university programs exemplified resource sharing and collective knowledge-building.

Participants gained valuable skills in English interpreting and strategies to foster engagement in multicultural classrooms. The seminar emphasized the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs, reinforcing the University of Baguio’s commitment to preparing culturally competent educators.

This seminar not only facilitated knowledge sharing but also strengthened partnerships among UB’s academic programs. By fostering a culture of collaboration and cross-cultural competence, UB continues to lead in preparing educators for the challenges and opportunities of a globalized world.
