“IN IT TO WIN IT” – Empowering Freshmen Pre-Service Teachers for Academic Success

The “IN IT TO WIN IT” webinar empowered freshmen pre-service teachers with essential academic strategies, leadership opportunities, and the support they need to succeed in their college journey and future careers.

The transition to college life can be both exciting and challenging, especially for freshmen pre-service teachers who are laying the foundation for their future careers. The recent webinar, “IN IT TO WIN IT,” held on September 21, 2024, equipped students with the tools needed to craft a successful academic game plan. The focus was on essential skills such as goal-setting, time management, seeking help when necessary, and nurturing a growth mindset—skills that are vital for success in both their college life and future classrooms.

A standout feature of this webinar was the collaboration between the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) programs alongside the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD). This partnership provided invaluable support to freshmen pre-service teachers, helping them address academic challenges, personal development, and mental health. By working together, these programs ensure a smoother college transition for students, helping them build resilience and succeed in their teaching careers.

The webinar also emphasized the importance of leadership development, encouraging freshmen to take active roles during the event. Several students were involved in various tasks, such as serving as emcees, leading the opening prayer, preparing certificates, and documenting the webinar. These hands-on opportunities provided freshmen with a sense of responsibility, empowering them to take initiative in their academic journey.

The event began with an opening prayer led by freshman BSED English major Ms. Cyrin Joy Clemente, followed by a presentation from Resource Speaker Ms. Kristina G. Valdez from the CCSD. Ms. Valdez shared valuable insights on goal-setting and determination, offering practical advice tailored for students navigating onsite studies. As the webinar concluded, participants reflected on their key takeaways, reinforcing the value of what they had learned.

The “IN IT TO WIN IT” webinar proved to be more than just a session on academic strategies—it was a powerful experience of collaboration, leadership, and empowerment. By combining academic guidance with student support services and leadership opportunities, this event provided freshmen pre-service teachers with the necessary tools to succeed as they begin their teaching careers.
