The University of Baguio (UB) proudly celebrates the achievement of its student researchers from the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA), who brought home top awards at the 5th Regional Undergraduate Students Research Conference held at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Theater on July 18, 2025. Themed “Sustainable Teacher Development: Responding to Global Challenges through Research and Collaboration,” the event served as a platform for emerging scholars to contribute research that addresses contemporary issues in education.

Representing the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English program, student researchers Laureen W. Tauli, Crisia Marie Balacang, Kyth Allan Manuel, and Paulyn Aquino presented their study titled “Influence of the Kankanaey Language on the English Pronunciation Proficiency of Senior High School Students of Ankileng National High School.” The research examined the extent to which the phonological features of the Kankanaey language influence English pronunciation, offering valuable implications for language instruction in multilingual contexts.

The research team, under the mentorship of Leandro Libod Rosete as adviser and co-author, and language teacher Sabrina Ramos received the Best Presentation Award, a distinction given to the most outstanding scholarly showcase of research findings. Adding to this academic milestone, Laureen Tauli was named Best Presenter for exceptional clarity, articulation, and academic discourse during the presentation

These recognitions underscore not only the scholarly merit of the research but also the University’s ongoing commitment to promoting culturally grounded and pedagogically relevant studies in the field of teacher education. In addition, this academic achievement reflects the strong research culture fostered within the School of Teacher Education, led by its Dean, Dr. Antonio Mangaliag, and supported by the Program Chair of the Bachelor of Secondary Education, Dr. Dahlia Soriano. The University of Baguio commends its students and faculty mentors for their dedication to academic excellence and their contribution to the advancement of educational research in the region.
