The University of Baguio’s School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (UB-STELA), guided by the values of competence, integrity, and service, has launched an exciting collaboration with Khon Kaen University’s College of Local Administration (KKU-COLA) in Thailand. This partnership is designed to provide students meaningful academic and cultural exchange opportunities while fostering mutual growth in English language proficiency and intercultural understanding.

COLA KKU warmly welcomes the delegation from the University of Baguio, the Philippines, fostering strong academic and cultural collaboration.

A Milestone in Academic Exchange

On January 9, a delegation of ten UB-STELA students arrived at Khon Kaen International Airport to begin their two-month exchange program. The group comprises four students from the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, five from the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Major in English, and one from the Bachelor of Arts in English Language. They were accompanied by UB-STELA faculty members Dr. Michelle Ranges, Program Chair of the BA English Language (BAEL) program, and Ms. Beverly Laltoog, the Bachelor of Political Science Internship Coordinator.

Welcoming the group were KKU-COLA representatives Dr. Charles Ruangthamsing, D.r Xenia Garnace, Mr. Amnat Okratok, and KKU student volunteers, who ensured a smooth transition for the UB students. Upon arrival to COLA, the students were toured around campus, navigating the various school facilities and buildings, introducing them to shuttle bus routes, and assisting them with purchasing their sim cards and trying authentic Thai food. The highlight of the reception was establishing a buddy system, where two KKU-COLA students were paired with each UB student, fostering cross-cultural connections.

A Heartfelt Welcome and Cultural Exchange

On January 10, the UB delegation was formally welcomed during a morning program led by Dr. Xenia R. Emperador-Garnace at KKU-COLA. The event was graced by Assoc. Prof. Dr Peerasit Kanmuansilpa, Founding Dean and Senior Advisor of KKU-COLA expressed his gratitude for the partnership and appreciation for Filipino culture.

Dr. Dapiawen, Dean of UB-STELA, Dr. Ranges, and Ms. Laltoog emphasized the program’s significance in providing academic enrichment and cultural awareness. Tokens of appreciation were exchanged between the two universities, followed by a group photo and a lunch showcasing Thai cuisine, offering the UB students their first taste of local flavors.

Objectives and Key Activities

This partnership is rooted in shared goals of academic and cultural enrichment:

  • Language Development and Cultural Exchange: The buddy system allows UB BA and BSED English students to mentor KKU-COLA students in English. At the same time, the latter enhances their English proficiency through real-life practice. Simultaneously, Filipino students gain insights into Thai culture, deepening their intercultural competence.
  • Academic Immersion: The UB delegation will study Thailand’s local government system and lead an English Camp Program for Thai students. This hands-on experience will broaden their knowledge and prepare them for global opportunities.
  • Cross-Cultural Performances: The students plan to present a performance showcasing Philippine culture and teach their Thai counterparts Filipino songs, creating a vibrant exchange of traditions.

Progress and Shared Expectations

During a courtesy call and orientation with Asst. Prof. Dr. Sirisak Laochankham, Dean of KKU-COLA, on January 13, both UB and KKU students expressed their enthusiasm for the program. The sessions highlighted the positive impact of the buddy system, where students from both universities benefit from cultural immersion and linguistic practice. UB students also shared their expectations, including participating in Thai culture and language courses, organizing public affairs-centered English programs, and learning traditional Thai practices.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Michelle Ranges encapsulated the spirit of the program in her message:

“This collaboration aims to provide our students with meaningful and enriching experiences in English language mentoring through the buddy system. We will create opportunities for cultural exchange and language development, fostering long-lasting connections beyond the classroom.”

This partnership is a testament to both universities’ commitment to nurturing global citizens. By bridging cultures and fostering collaboration, the UB-KKU partnership sets the stage for a brighter, interconnected future for its students.
