A Trailblazer in Education and Environmental Advocacy: The Inspiring Journey of Assistant Professor IV Rendel B. Batchar – STE’s Batch 2013

In the bustling academic corridors of Bataan Peninsula State University Dinalupihan Campus, one name stands out—Assistant Professor IV Rendel B. Batchar. As Campus Chairperson of the Research and Development Office, Prof. Batchar has carved a remarkable path that intertwines his passion for education, his commitment to environmental advocacy, and his vision of empowering future generations.

Born in a serene town in Davao del Norte and raised in a family deeply rooted in education and service, Prof. Batchar’s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and purpose.

Growing up in Davao del Norte, Prof. Batchar was surrounded by nature’s beauty, which ignited his love for the environment. His mother, an inspiring teacher, instilled in him the joy of learning at an early age. “She taught me to read and write at home, sparking my interest in teaching,” he shares.

Moving to Lubao, Pampanga, during high school was pivotal. It brought his family closer and strengthened the bonds that continue to shape his outlook on life. Guided by a father who transitioned from military service to pursue his passions and a mother who balanced running a family business with nurturing her children, Prof. Batchar grew up in an environment that championed education, responsibility, and freedom to explore passions.

“My mentors saw potential in me, and their guidance inspired me to step out of my comfort zone,”

Initially set on becoming a physician, Prof. Batchar’s academic journey took an unexpected yet transformative turn. Personal circumstances led him to reevaluate his goals, prompting a visit to the University of Baguio’s School of Teacher Education (STE). This decision marked the beginning of a lifelong devotion to teaching.

At the University of Baguio School of Teacher Education, Mr. Batchar found not just an academic foundation but the guiding light that illuminated his true calling. Thriving under the mentorship of dedicated educators who saw beyond the surface, he discovered and nurtured hidden talents that would shape his future. His professors not only recognized his potential but also pushed him to excel, igniting a passion for communication, argumentation, and debate. A standout moment in his journey was representing UB in a prestigious city-wide essay writing competition, where his skills earned him the gold—a triumph that remains one of his most treasured milestones. Through these experiences, UB STE became the catalyst that transformed his aspirations into a lifelong commitment to education. Thus, in 2013, Prof. Batchar graduated as Cum Laude of the program Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Biological Science.

Prof. Batchar began his teaching career in Lubao, facing the challenges of transitioning to the K-12 curriculum. His education at UB, particularly the integration of physical sciences in his degree, proved invaluable as he navigated the complexities of teaching in a spiral progression approach.

The pursuit of excellence led him to roles beyond teaching. From Science Learning Area Coordinator to the first Senior High School principal at his alma mater, he embraced leadership opportunities that broadened his perspective and honed his skills.

Transitioning to higher education was a turning point. A teaching post at BPSU allowed him to align his academic passions with research and development. “My mentors saw potential in me, and their guidance inspired me to step out of my comfort zone,” he reflects on accepting his role as Campus Research and Development Chairperson.

Prof. Batchar’s passion for environmental education blossomed during his first teaching assignment at BPSU. A course on Environmental Issues opened his eyes to the importance of fostering environmental literacy across disciplines.

This passion inspired a collaborative research project on environmental education in Early Childhood Education, culminating in a children’s book celebrating the ecological and cultural value of the pawikan. Slated for launch at Bataan’s Pawikan Festival, the book symbolizes Prof. Batchar’s commitment to nurturing environmental stewardship in young minds.

Amid his professional accomplishments, Prof. Batchar remains grounded. Whether traveling solo to reflect or cooking for his family, he prioritizes mindfulness to maintain balance in life. “Detachment from work is essential. I no longer feel guilty about taking time to rest,” he shares.

Prof. Batchar’s advice to aspiring educators is profound: “Embrace your individuality, as it shapes the way you teach. Respect diversity in the classroom and empower students to express themselves.” His belief in lifelong learning is evident in his humility, as he acknowledges that teaching is a reciprocal process.

As a certified Potterhead who draws inspiration from Professor Snape, Prof. Batchar mirrors the complexity and depth of his favorite character. Like Snape, his journey is marked by resilience, self-discovery, and unwavering dedication to his purpose.

From his roots in Davao del Norte to his pivotal role at BPSU, Assistant Professor Rendel B. Batchar exemplifies what it means to be a transformative educator—a quality that was surely rooted in his training at the University of Baguio. His story inspires not just his students but all who strive to make a meaningful difference in education and beyond.

Professor Batchar stands as a shining testament to the unparalleled excellence of UB STE graduates—proof that with determination, passion, and purpose, they are not just ready to conquer the world, but to inspire it.
