The University of Baguio’s School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA) successfully conducted a seminar-workshop on Classroom-Based Action Research (CBAR) for Field Study 1 and 2 students on September 27, 2024, at the Centennial Library. The event, attended by 85 participants comprising pre-service teachers from the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd), and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) programs, aimed to equip future educators with essential research skills to address classroom challenges effectively,

The seminar emphasized the value of action research as a vital tool for identifying and solving gaps in teaching and learning practices. Through interactive sessions, participants explored methods to assess and improve instructional strategies, particularly in areas aligned with the Department of Education’s Matatag Curriculum. The program highlighted how action research could foster foundational literacy and numeracy skills, contributing to the global education goals under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.

Discussions connected the importance of research to the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST), especially Domain 7, which focuses on professional growth through continuous research. Participants engaged in hands-on activities to develop action research tailored to their subject areas, such as improving reading and writing skills through guided reading and peer editing. The integration of information and communication technology (ICT), including digital storytelling platforms and grammar-checking tools, was also explored to enhance learning outcomes.
A highlight of the event was the participation of Mr. Joshua Nico Bati, a University of Baguio alumnus, DepEd Mathematics teacher, and accomplished researcher. His presentation underscored the importance of alumni engagement in bridging academic training with real-world teaching practices. Sharing his expertise and experiences, Mr. Bati inspired participants to adopt research-driven and innovative approaches in their future classrooms.
The seminar-workshop demonstrated the University of Baguio’s commitment to fostering a culture of research and lifelong learning among its future educators. By providing practical tools and actionable strategies, the event underscored the university’s dedication to producing teachers equipped to meet the evolving demands of the education sector while contributing to the improvement of teaching standards in the Philippines.
